Day 3 - Zubiri to Pamplona

Day 3 - Zubiri to Pamplona

Tapas for lunch

With the window open all night and the steady sound of the river drowning out any snorers, it was our best night’s sleep so far. We were up at 5:30 a.m., carrying our kit quietly to the garage/boot room to pack without waking anyone else.

We left the hostel and crossed the bridge just as the local clock tower chimed 6 a.m. The first hour was in darkness, headtorch on at first, then off as the sky slowly began to brighten. Around the 4 km mark, Gaby spotted a coffee sign and we took a short detour—about 750 metres round trip—for her caffeine hit.

The trail followed the River Arga, gently undulating through fields and woodlands, gradually becoming more urban. Nearing Pamplona, we crossed the Puente de la Trinidad over the Ultzama Ibaia and continued through the outskirts into the old town, Casco Antiguo, entering via the city walls and onto a narrow, atmospheric street that led to our albergue for the night, Maria y Jesús.

We arrived at 10:45 a.m., but it wasn’t open until midday. A friendly street cleaner explained the quiet streets—Día del Trabajador—and gave us a few local tips. We waited it out at a nearby café with refreshments.

Where we are staying tonight

At noon, we checked in, paid €11 each, got our bunk beds, showered, and did laundry. Then we explored Pamplona: the main plazas, the St. Nicolás area (tapas stop), past the Plaza de Toros (world’s 4th largest bullring), and La Ciudadela. Found a large tub of ice cream and ate it in the plaza while watching the world go by.
