Day 4 - Pamplona to Puente la Reina

Monumento al Peregrino

A quiet night, with surprisingly few snorers given we were in a 24-bed dorm. I was woken at 5 a.m. by someone’s phone alarm and lay there until 5:15 before heading to the loo. We carried our bags out to the reception foyer to pack and were on the move by 5:55 a.m. Unsurprisingly, the streets of Pamplona were quiet apart from a few other early pilgrims.

Camino Frances

7 km outside Pamplona

It was getting light as we left the outskirts and moved into open countryside. The trail rose gently to the village of Zariquiegui, where we stopped for coffee. From there, we climbed steadily to the Alto de Perdón at 750 metres, reaching the Monumento al Peregrino -Erromesen eskulturak. There were wide views in both directions from the ridge.

As we descended, dark clouds built ahead. We sheltered at the entrance of the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Obanos just as the rain and even some hail arrived. We pressed on quickly to Puente la Reina, reaching our albergue by 11:30 a.m. just five minutes before a second heavy downpour, which we watched from the shelter of the entrance.

We checked in to very affordable (€9 bed) Albergue de Peregrinos Padres Reparadores just before midday. After a quick shower, we cooked lunch with the supplies we’d carried from Pamplona.

It contined to rain well into the afternoon, but we managed to get to the supermarket, visit the bridge and walk arou.d town witout getting too wet.
