Day 14 - Población de Campos to Ledigos

Wild flowers & crops

Do you have ear plugs?” I was asked last night by the Lady in the bunk next to me. “My husband snores very loudly.” I ended up using ear plugs for the first time - just one in the left ear. The right was buried in the pillow anyway. I only put it in after waking at 2am to go to the loo. Gaby heard him all night, even with her ear plugs in.

Camino Frances

6:50am a small village plaza

Up at 5:30 and out the door by 6:10am. The moon was low and a deep orange. After about an hour, the sun rose - a warm ray on our faces. Much of today’s walking was in straight lines. First alongside the main road to Carrión de los Condes, where we stopped for coffee and picked up supplies. From there it was another flat, fairly straight stretch all the way to Ledigos.

Camino Frances

Easy walking

It was our longest day so far - 39km. We didn’t have much choice. It was either 15km or 39km - the only two options with accommodation that wasn’t fully booked. Fifteen felt too short. At €22 a bunk, it was our most expensive night on the Camino, but still cheap by UK standards. Also our most luxurious - proper sheets, free shampoo and body milk, a heated sitting room, even card payment for the washing machine.

We arrived at 3pm. When we checked in and mentioned we’d struggled to find space, they told us May was high season and people often book up to a week ahead. So we spent a few hours in the afternoon making forward bookings for the next seven days.

After laundry and a good use of the free toiletries, there was just enough time for wine and dinner (probably in the wrong order), before turning in for the night.

Tomorrow we will pass the half way point of the 780 km Camino!
