View from Cerro Tedeón, Navarrete
It almost felt like a holiday today with a lie-in until 6am. We even had time for breakfast before leaving the albergue around 7, though we still made a quick stop at a bakery for a second breakfast, eaten on the move as we walked out through the streets.
It was a short day, just 20 km or so to the small town of Navarrete. As we walked towards Logroño, we had clear views back to Viana, its old buildings perched on the hill. Not every part of the Camino is scenic though—on the outskirts of Logroño we found ourselves beside a busy main road and through industrial areas. But after crossing the river Ebro, we were back into the more familiar historic streets, past the church, and straight into a café for a third breakfast. Before leaving the city, we took a small detour to Decathlon to replace the waterproof trousers Gaby had lost somewhere along the way. The weather was turning colder, and rain was forecast over the next few days. We’d already been caught in one thunderstorm, so we didn’t want to risk getting caught out again without the right kit.
Back on the main trail, it was only 6 km to Navarrete. We stopped first at the municipal albergue to check opening times, then found another bakery for some pre-lunch snacks. After checking in at 1pm, we showered, did some laundry, and later picked up a good steak from the butcher to cook for dinner.
Navarrete
The afternoon was spent exploring the village, visiting the ornately decorated Iglesia de la Asunción, taking in the views from Cerro Tedeón (548m), and walking past the Plaza de Toros de Navarrete.
