CARRETERA AUSTRAL

Day Two - Puerto Octay to Hornopirén

Posted on 20th Feb 2016

After a lazy start we headed off with the surrounding volcanoes covered in low cloud, they stayed covered for most on the day.

Heading down the east side on the Llanquihue lake through the village of Ensenada that received about 30cm off volcanic ash during the 2015 Calbuco volcano eruption, we continued past Cochamo (famous for its trekking/climbing & granite towers) and round the gravel coast road until reaching Caleta Pulche. From here the road improved and we pulled into Hornopirén by early evening.

After a visit to the tourist info office we headed out to the see the trail head for the start on the Hornopirén and Yates volcano treks, but were told that Hornopirén volcano was off limits as there were no trails and the Yates crater was a two day return trek. We retreated to the Oelckers Hotels in Hornopirén to plan what to do for day three before heading south on the ferry.
