Day 16 - Bercianos del Real Camino to Reliegos

We both slept well despite a very creaky floor that must have been making noise all night as people went to the toilet. Up at 5:30 and out the door again by 6am.

We seemed to be the only ones out with headtorches, walking in the dark as the morning sky slowly turned orange. There were few signs of life at the albergue when we left.

Our first and only coffee stop of the day came after 8 km. Gaby ended up with two coffees—an error on the part of the waitress—but she paid for both, and we were given a free Napolitano pastry, so it evened out.

The Camino today was straight and flat, much like the last couple of days, following close to the road. It ended up being a short day at just 20 km, as we’d mistakenly booked an albergue in the wrong village—but we were quite pleased with our mistake when we arrived.

Although the albergue didn’t officially open until midday, we were on the doorstep by 10:50, and they let us in at 11:30. It was one of the more welcoming check-ins—run by a Spanish-Argentine couple and set in a modern building with a bar and courtyard. We upgraded from €12 bunk beds to €15 single beds in larger rooms, as we were told it would be full and the bunk rooms were a bit cramped.

After showers and hanging out our clothes to dry, we used the pilgrim kitchen and dining area to have lunch.

The sun was out, so after putting on clean clothes, I washed the ones I’d been wearing. A walk around the village ended with ice cream. We spent the afternoon planning and making reservations for the upcoming week, then had a pilgrim’s menu meal at the albergue.
