				Illuminated crochet sign
We left the albergue at the customary 6am, passing an illuminated crochet sign for Reliegos as we moved through the darkness.
The rain, which hadn’t been forecast, started gradually before becoming steady enough to warrant a pause to put on waterproofs. After 6 km, we reached Mansilla de las Mulas and took our first and only coffee break.
The route became increasingly urban as we approached León. It’s another city with poor Camino signage - from the trail itself to the cathedral and museum, it was a matter of constant guessing which direction to take.
Unable to check into our hotel before 2pm, we took refuge in a fast food place to rest and plan the afternoon. The hotel stay was, frankly, an experience - featuring one of the worst showers I’ve ever had. As I’ll note in my upcoming review: “the experience was like being attacked by an angry boiler,” with scalding water spraying not only from the showerhead but also from various parts of the pipework.
In the afternoon, we visited the cathedral and the attached museum, stocked up in one of the larger supermarkets, and looked forward to a snore-free night in our double room.
