Day 18 León to Hospital de Órbigo

I think you know our morning routine. We headed through the city illuminated by street lights, following the map on my phone as the Camino signage was almost non-existent. First stop for photos was at the Convento de San Marcos before crossing over the Río Bernesga.

We slowly made our way through residential streets, then an industrial area as we left the city of León. In the last suburb before the open countryside, we stopped for the first and only coffee of the day.

It was wide open expanses for the rest of today—first through rolling countryside, then long straight sections along roads that would put the Romans to shame. Just flat, never-ending roads with monotonous views. We had taken a variant that, although 3 km longer, was supposedly more scenic. I can't imagine how monotonous the regular variant must have been.

Upon reaching the village of Hospital de Órbigo, we crossed the Paso Honroso bridge then walked down the historic main street in the hot midday sun to find our albergue.

It had a large garden, so we made the most of the warm weather while staying shaded from the direct sun. We had carried heavy food all the way from León, only to realise there was, in fact, a large supermarket just outside the village. So we ate all we could before venturing out to buy some real food to cook for the evening.
