Photo: Incredible food at service at the hotel thanks to the owner.
An early morning as we left the hotel at 7:20am to walk the 1.5 kms into town to catch the 8:00am bus to Chiang Mai. The journey was uneventful. On arrival in Chiang Mai bus station no. 2 we crossed the road to bus station no. 3 to pick up the tickets we had purchased online for our journey onto Chiang Khong.
We boarded the bus with about 10 mins to wait before departure. The driver came round and checked everyone's tickets, then someone else came round and checked the tickets again, everyone's except ours!
We set off on time. After 25 minutes, 10 of those stuck in traffic, we pulled into the bus companies own compond and after the driver said something in Thai everyone got off the bus. We followed, and were taken to a room where we waited for 30 mins before setting off again but this time on a different bus.
By this time we were about 45 minutes behind schedule and it got worse as the journey went on. We eventually arrived in Chiang Khong about 2 hours late. The journey from Chiang Mai had taken us 8 hours.
We alighted the bus at the Tesco Lotus supermarket as per the guidance from our hotel; with the owner saying she would pick us up there to take us to the hotel. Luckily she was still waiting for us despite our delay.
We had a meal cooked for us on our arrival, the food and the service we have received here has been outstanding.
An early night ready for an early morning border crossing to Laos.
