Back to the Pilgrim Life

A very early start - even earlier than our Camino mornings. Alarm at 4:00 am, in the car by 4:30. An uneventful drive to the airport and a short flight to Gatwick, which I slept through.

We had a two-hour stopover there; Gaby found a Wetherspoons with free coffee refills, so we settled in. One coffee and two teas later, we boarded our flight to Gran Canaria.

The four-and-a-half-hour flight went smoothly enough. I slept for the first two hours, then the rest dragged.
We arrived on time at Las Palmas, immediately walked the wrong way to the bus stop, and then waited in the full sun. A couple of people in reflective jackets were giving bus advice — not cheerfully — and made it clear this was a public service, not a tourist one. The bus’s luggage space was tiny, so anyone with a large bag had to wait for the next hourly service. Our bus eventually left about a quarter full, with people and suitcases still standing by. Welcome to island logistics.

Forty minutes later we reached our stop and walked five minutes to the hotel. Our first room had a broken patio lock, giving the pool guests easy access to our belongings. Reception claimed there were no other rooms, but after a quick inspection and a phone call, one miraculously appeared. The new room had a working lock, the same moldy bathroom, and no air-conditioning. Still, we’d booked the cheapest option available, so expectations were met.
After a short walk to the beach where Gaby dipped her feet in the sea, we stopped at the supermarket for supplies, ate dinner in the room, and had an early night

I worked out the reason for the toilet paper stuffed in the sink overflow hole, to keep the cockroaches out…bad news it doesn't work!
