Maspalomas

Maspalomas

Gaby shot out the door for an early beach walk while I demonstrated my commitment to horizontal living. By the time she got back, I’d heroically made it out of bed and we had breakfast before catching the 8:56 bus to El Faro — the lighthouse.

The lighthouse and the attached “tourist information” didn’t open until 10:30, so we wandered along the beach. Gaby went for a swim. I watched from the shore and gently slow-roasted.

We returned at 10:30 to discover the tourism centre was heavier on tourism than information. The lady didn’t seem to know much about anything except how to hand out a free credential and stamp, which she did. She then casually mentioned there was a forest fire warning and the trail was probably closed. Excellent.

We spent most of the day trying to work out whether we were walking, bussing, or simply giving up and becoming permanent residents of Maspalomas. After a phone call to the relevant government department and some digging online, we found out we could walk up to 400 metres of elevation — after that, the exclusion zone kicked in. Anything above that would be a bus job. We’ll see if the alert changes tomorrow.

We crossed the sand dunes back to the hotel for lunch, then returned to the beach for more swimming (Gaby) and Camino research (me). Back at the hotel we made dinner, went out to watch the full moon hanging over the sea like it had nothing better to do, then headed back for the usual laundry-by-hand routine, showers, and packing for tomorrow.
