Gaby shot out the door for an early beach walk while I demonstrated my commitment to horizontal living. By the time she got back, I’d heroically made it out of bed and we had breakfast before catching the 8:56 bus to El Faro — the lighthouse.

A long, hot day. We were genuinely surprised to see the forest alert downgraded to green — and updated before 7 a.m., which must be some kind of Canarian administrative miracle.

A quiet night, and although we woke early, there was no need to hurry. Just before 8 a.m. we walked to the bakery for breakfast and some bread for lunch, then took it back to the room to eat in peace.

We woke to a cold, windy, rainy start — the kind of weather that makes you double-check whether you’ve accidentally booked a winter holiday by mistake. Visibility was poor, but the pine trees still looked great as we began the initial ascent out of the village.

Gáldar to Las Palmas

Gáldar to Las Palmas

From our apartment in Gáldar we walked the 2 km to the sea pools. The pools were very slippery and full of fish. Gaby went for a swim while I stayed dry, then we sheltered briefly from a heavy rain shower before heading back.

Birthday swim. At 8:30 we both went into the sea - my only swim of the entire trip. Back at the apartment for a quick shower, then coffee and cakes to properly mark the occasion.

Going Home

Gaby went for an early morning 1.5 km walk and swim while I remained committed to bed. Back at the apartment we showered, then had coffee and cakes to start the day properly.
